Imperial War Museum North, Manchester

I worked with the project team in the run up to opening the new museum, helping the Director take stock of progress, and advising on operations during the final stages of the capital project. This included designing and overseeing the delivery of the training plan and writing the operational handbook for staff and volunteers.

My proudest achievement was leading the team that developed, financed and implemented the social inclusion volunteer programme ‘Shape Your Future’, hailed by the DCMS as an exemplar project in A Giving Culture: Getting the best out of the relationship between the voluntary and community sector and DCMS (2005). The £300,000 pilot programme – funded by ESF and the Learning and Skills Council – involved 250 socially excluded people from the Trafford area, providing training towards a Level 2 NVQ in Cultural Heritage (visitor services) with the aim of building confidence and skills to enter the employment market or further education.
